Last one with the chalk offense Part 6

Power Right Kick Miami

This little bit of inspiration comes from James Vint I was listening to him being interviewed on a Podcast where he is describing how to combine Midline and the Power Play.  So I tweaked it a using the Power Kick Scheme or if you are a system guy its Tony Franklin's power.  The Miami tag is where we will put a midline concept on the back side of any blocking scheme.

Formation is Ace
LT Lock it Block back side DE
LG Counter Pull to Play DE
C Block Backside LB
RG Combo with RT to Backside Linebacker
RT (Get wide splits) Combo with RG to Backside Linebacker
X Block Corner or #1 with inside leverage
H Block the Safety
Y Crack number one Linebacker in the box
Z Block Corner or #1 with inside leverage.
F Align in front of QB Drop step opposite: POA: A Gap-Out. Inside leverage on pulling Guard
Q Read first man on the line of scrimmage past the center on the back side his playside number.  If the number goes up the field it is a give read.  If the Playside number goes lateral then it is a keep read.

Last one with the chalk offense Part 5

Q Power Z Jet Read

One thing about well coached defense is that as a play caller you can take advantage of they being well coached.  When we run jet make sure you let officials know that it is a forward pass so that if the quarterback is slow with the read and the Z drops the jet it is an incomplete pass.  The ball goes back to the original line of scrimmage helps your team stay out of 2nd or 3rd and the teen's.

Formation Blue Z Fly
  • LT Run Zone Left
  • LG Skip Pull to Play Side Linebacker
  • C Block Back and cover up Defensive Tackle
  • RG Combo with RT to Backside Linebacker
  • RT (Get wide splits) Combo with RG to Backside Linebacker
  • X Block Corner with outside leverage
  • H Boss the Safety
  • Y Block out on Safety
  • Z Fly Motion get ready to receive the ball on jet if not Rock the Baby and carry out fake.
  • F Align in B Gap Bugger Block the DE
  • Q Read Backside Linebacker If he steps away from you with the jet keep the ball and run power. If he steps towards you Underhand pitch the ball to the Z on the Jet.

Another Place for Improving your Coaching

Talent Code and the Tony Franklin System Chapter 2

Myelin

Myelin is the insulator that wraps around nerve cells and the more myelin is wrapped around a cell the faster and more efficient that movement pattern becomes.
Talent Code (Coyle 34-35)
Q: Why is targeted, mistake-focused practice so effective?
A: Because the best way to build a good circuit is to fire it, attend to mitakes. then fire it again, over and over. Struggle is not an option: it's a biological requirement.

Q:Why are passion and persistence key ingredients of talent?
A: Because wrapping myelin around a big circuit requires immense energy and time. If you don't love it, you'll never work hard enough to be great.

Coyle states that myelin operates by a few fundamental principals.
  1. The firing of circuits is paramount.  The mechanism responds to action with urgent repetition.
  2. Myelin is universal. Myelin doesn't care who you are-it cares what you do.
  3. Myelin wraps-it doesn't unwrap. Once a skill circuit is insulated, you cannot un-insulate it.  That's why habits are hard to break.  The only way to break them is to build new habits by myelinating new circuits.

So What?

I watched as a former Tony Franklin System school complete about 15 pat-n-go throws between the Junior Varsity Game and the Varsity Game against us last year.  The quarterback still knew how to throw it and the receiver still knew how to stack the defensive back and keep his body between the ball and the defender.  This school had run The System for about 5 years we did end-up winning both the JV and Varsity games but   they completing those pat-n-goes did make it very difficult to beat them.

This is why it is so important to have consistency with this how you teach pat-n-go catch and throw.
  • Align on top of the numbers to 1 yard inside of the numbers
  • Must be on the numbers on this route.
  • Quarterback has the bottom of the numbers to the sideline to throw the ball.

And in a few years those coaches will be scratching their heads wondering why they cannot throw and complete the deep ball anymore once those kids who developed the myelin for the pat-n-go have graduated.

Last one with the chalk offense Part 4

This concept is if your team gets really good at running stick and the defense uses a junk of the week coverage to stop Stick and the play-side inside backer jumps the Stick Route. 51 is a screen to the X receiver to the left.

Stick Right 51 Jail

  • LT 90 Protection and high wall DE; Cut if DE crosses face
  • LG 90 Set show hands, flat release block Alley Defender (#2)
  • C 90 Set show hands, flat release block 1st LB in Box (#3)
  • RG 90 Set show hands, flat release Peel block Most-Dangerous D-Lineman chasing receiver
  • RT 90 set and show hands flat release block BSLB to Safety
  • X (Align 7 yards from Tackle) 51 Jail
  • Y 5 yard Stick route Work to the inside pad of the hole defender
  • Z Mandatory Outside Release. Run Through Outside pad of CB
  • H 2 Steps Up-Field Block Most-Dangerious Man
  • F Free Release Sweed route
  • QB Read Pre Snap MOR, Stick if Clear Read Stick to Sweed Cloudy Pump Retreat Get Big Throw to X as he comes down line early

Last one with the chalk offense Part 3

Rocket/Laser Screen

When you screen the other team to death there are several ways that they deal with it one is that they will actually tackle your F in the back field not allowing him to release on the screen.  This is a System concept a little tutorial remember all the screens to the right are 40's and 50's are to the left receivers are numbered from the sideline to the box 1,2,3,4. So a 41 Solid screen to the Z on the right. 60 set is quick passing game protection, and 90 set is 5 step.

Rocket

  • LT 60 set Release Flat Left to Flat Defender
  • LG 60 Set Release Flat to Right and Peel Block
  • C 60 Set Release Flat to Right Box to Safety
  • RG 60 Set Release Flat Right to Alley Defender
  • RT 60 protection, high wall to cut defender
  • X 51 Solid- 2 Steps Up-field, Retrace, work towards QB Straight down LOS,
  • Y Go up 2 Steps & Crack 1st LB in Box
  • Z Block Corner or most dangerous man
  • H 2 Steps Up-field Block#1 or most dangerous man
  • F Slow Screen Right - slide to inside leg of Right Guard and release  with his release.find grass outside the box
  • Take a 90 Drop and set throw slow screen right (F) if "clear" if cloudy picture then throw solid screen away (51 Solid)

Laser

  • LT 60 protection, high wall to cut defender
  • LG 60 Set Release Flat to Left and Alley Defender
  • C 60 Set Release Flat to Left Box to Safety
  • RG 60 Set Release Flat Left to  and Peel Block

  • F Slow Screen Left- slide to inside leg of Left Guard and release  with his release.find grass outside the box
  • Take a 90 Drop and set throw slow screen left (F) if "clear" if cloudy picture then throw solid screen away (41 Solid)

Total Program Football 7th to Seniors Part 3

The Offensive Line

Unlike every other position on the field playing offensive line is the most unnatural position to play in football.  (it is rare that you see 8 & 9 year olds pushing cars up and down their drive ways I did but it was a Subaru and was trying to simulate the grain wheel on Conan the Barbarian)

They are usually the worst athletes on the team and the great groups of them usually have the best work ethics.  Playing offensive line usually involves getting as close to the 10,000 hour rule as possible.

What Is the 10000 Hour Rule?

The 10000 Hour Rule is just that. This is the idea that it takes approximately 10000 hours of deliberate practice to master a skill.

For instance, it would take 10 years of practicing 3 hours a day to become a master in your subject. It would take approximately 5 years of full-time employment to become proficient in your field. Simply work out how many hours you have already achieved and calculate how many more you need to clock up before you reach 10000.

What gets your offensive linemen close to the 10,000 hour rule outside developers:
  • Powerlifting*
  • Joining an USA weightlifting club*
  • Wrestling*
  • Judo*
  • Football Camps
  • System Team Camps if a Client
There is really no progression for offensive linemen they need to get reps don't spend more than 15 seconds correcting John Wooden Coaching.  The goal is to try to get 7 reps for each drill work a zone and a gap day every other day during install.  Emphasis group work on offense 7-7, inside vs barrels or hand shields, routes on air, screen drills, NASSCAR Drill.  Only work team with plays that need timing or good on good for a max of 16 reps.

THE SLAMMER (A HOW TO GUIDE TO MAKING YOUR OWN MEDICINE BALLS) By Pierre Augé

An Issue that many have had to deal with over the years is how and where to get an inexpensive implement for effective physical training. Now I’m not going to drag you along with a great history of how the Medicine ball was originally used by the military for that exact purpose. What I will tell you isthatsince then the simple inexpensive Medicine ball has come to cost a small fortune. No longer! Now an inexpensive and durable ball can be manufactured for only a few dollars a little bit of effort and a great deal of patience. These balls are great for anything you would normally do with a Medicine ball, however they are ideal for use as a Slam Ball during CrossFit workouts! Hence I dub thee SLAMMER! For thisis what we do with thee.

Tempo Offense

Why Tempo the offense?

  • It makes a bad offensive line better in the 2nd and 4th quarter.
  • If you have slower twitch players going faster gives them an advantage.
  • Never huddle as it is a waste of practice time
  • It allows defensive coaches and players the time to regroup and think.
  • Play faster than a defense can react.
  • You don't have to condition your team as much unless you have a ton of two way players can spend more practice time on  position specific/ football specific drills and conditioning
Jimmy Johnson makes a great point:

Total Program Football 7th to Seniors Part 1

The first time I heard of a program running the same offense and defense at the lower levels was in the book Friday Night Lights by H. G. Bissinger.  He was describing that the football players at Permian High School were running the same plays since POP Warner Football.  Fast Forward to my first football meeting of my very first job as a Junior High Coach in Copperas Cove Texas. Coach Jack Welch who I have learned so much from I have adapted his blue print to my own about program building.   Before he became the head football coach at Copperas Cove they were everybody’s homecoming game.  They did have some great individual talent but there are lots of programs across the state of Texas that has four plus Division One Scholarship players and they are sitting home come play-off time.  What makes Copperas Cove so special is the ability to turn program kids into very good high school football players.  There are several factors that led to this:

  1. Alignment of Staff in the summer while I was working at Copperas Cove we always had a coaches retreat.  Not the usual work 1-2 hours a day if any.  But we put in a good at least 9-5 day with competitive games afterward volleyball, tennis, poker, ect.  The varsity coaches would put us on the white board make us explain the X's and O's and also make us teach and explain drills.  The objective of the whole thing was to make sure that the same drill and coaching cues used by 7th grade Receivers Coach  is the same as the Varsity Receivers Coach they both were saying the same things.
  2. The Progression in Copperas Cove 7th grade ran the 4-3 and were taught all of that package that the varsity used with that front with the exceptions of Defensive Line Twists.  8th grade a Eagle Front, Freshmen a 4-2-5 and 3-3 Stack, and Junior Varsity a 3-4 front was added.  There was a lot of carry over from each front.  Our get your best athlete but as intelligent athlete on the field was out End who always lined up in a 5 to the open side.
  3. Strength and Conditioning since I had played at Southwest Texas and for a time Larry Levermann was my strength coach I became our Junior High's Strength and Conditioning which meant I worked worked all summer for free but learned how to coach power clean (which is one of the most under coached lifts in football but that is for a latter blog).  Our District strength coach really taught me how to teach the power clean and expected me to teach all of the Junior High Athletes how to power clean which we did there was like 35 freshmen who were 185lb plus in the power clean that year.
  4. Our Discipline was also aligned if we had an athlete miss practice we used the same procedures that the high school used.
  5. The expectations of the staff were also aligned we got a blue pocket folder with our duties who we were responsible for academically what equipment we were required to take out and put up after practice every day.  We were also suppose to make calls to our athletes parents and let them know how they were doing in school, practice, any discipline issues etc every week.

I also worked in Pearland for coach Tony Heath he is very similar to what Coach Welch did at Copperas Cove.  Pearland also was on a lot of home coming schedules.  And in 2010 they were the 5A state champs. Both with Coach Heath and Coach Welch they were very important to me as developing into a Coach, Christian, and a Man and I have thanked God for having put them in my life.

3-4 Fire Zone Defense

3-4 Fire Zone Defense

  • We are an 8 man front football team out of the 3-4 we are just not going to let you know which 8
  • We will Blitz our opponents into submission and be sound against the pass with zone blitz packages.
  • We do not have players that are both pass and run players
  • We teach and circuit jobs
  • We will play with great technique
  • We will teach tackling
  • We can call our defense to run strengths, field, formations.

Vertical Set?

Why vertical set?

  1. Allows you to play a lesser athlete at Offensive Linemen and also throw the ball.
  2. It is a more natural athletic movement Vertical Set vs Kick Sliding Guy Morris "You don't see corner backs kick sliding Receivers on Sundays?"
  3. In Dave Christensen's Winning Offensive Line Drills he spends 45 minutes on how to set to an defensive lineman aligned to the inside and outside.  Vertical Set saves the practice time.
  4. Reduces the the impact on the Quarterback if the Offensive Lineman get beats physically 5 yards to accelerate with the kick slide vs. 2 yards to accelerate with the vertical set.
  5. All Twists and Stunts happen in front of the Offensive Linemen.
  6. The way Defensive Linemen win is to get their hips even with the Offensive Linemen hips. A vertical setting offensive lineman gets his hips away from the defensive lineman.
  7. Vertical Set helps keep Offensive Linemen shoulders square to the line of scrimmage the kick slide will always cause a shoulder tilt.
